Hunting for white truffles
Share

It’s officially autumn and white truffle season in San Miniato has finally started. We have already been on a few white truffle hunts in the woods close to home with our truffle hunter friend Luca and his trusty dogs, Fiuto the lagotto and Birba, a 14 year old lab and beagle cross.

We hunt on a beautiful hilltop property of the Savini family, who have been in the truffle business for four generations. It’s completely private (unless you count the obvious tracks left behind by wild boars) and all you can see around you are layers of hills and woods, one farmhouse in the distance and a medieval hermitage. Traipsing through those woods on a mild October or November morning watching dogs chase the indescribable scent of white truffles is one of the highlights of the whole year for me.
